Git Infrastructure Suite (Gits) is an infrastructure automation project designed to standardize the deployment and administration of self-hosted GitLab Community Edition. The project encapsulates infrastructure provisioning, platform configuration, secure remote access, and operational setup into a reproducible deployment workflow, enabling consistent Git hosting environments with minimal manual intervention.

Requirement

Deploying and operating a self-hosted Git platform required coordinating infrastructure provisioning, dependency installation, platform configuration, service initialization, network exposure, secure remote access, and ongoing administration. Performing these tasks manually introduced configuration drift, deployment inconsistencies, and operational overhead, making repeatable infrastructure provisioning difficult across different Linux environments.

Solution

The project establishes a standardized deployment workflow that automates the provisioning and configuration of a complete self-hosted Git platform. Cross-distribution automation provisions the underlying infrastructure, installs GitLab Community Edition, configures required system services, initializes the platform, and prepares the operating environment through a consistent deployment process.

Supporting infrastructure components, including Cockpit for system administration and Cloudflared Tunnels for secure remote connectivity, are integrated into the deployment workflow, allowing infrastructure management and external access to be provisioned alongside the Git platform without requiring manual network configuration.

By encapsulating infrastructure provisioning, platform configuration, and operational setup within reusable automation, the project transforms a traditionally manual deployment into a reproducible and maintainable deployment model that can be executed consistently across supported Linux distributions.

Outcome

The project established a repeatable deployment process for self-hosted Git infrastructure that significantly reduced manual configuration effort while improving deployment consistency across Linux environments.

Infrastructure provisioning, platform configuration, secure remote access, and administrative tooling became part of a unified automation workflow, reducing operational overhead, minimizing configuration drift, and simplifying ongoing platform management.
